Answers to your Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) around acupuncture, community acupuncture, and insurance.

Insurance FAQ

Do you accept insurance?

We don't bill insurance directly. As an out-of-network provider, Jiling can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Jiling is an out-of-network provider with insurance companies that cover most Patagonia employees. We also accept payments from Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flex Spending Accounts (FSA). Plans vary, so please contact your provider to verify the details of your specific policy before your appointment. Consider asking about reimbursement for out-of-network acupuncture, your deductible, and the number of treatments covered per year.

What acupuncture services will insurance cover?

Different insurance plans have different coverage policies. Insurance will sometimes cover the cost of acupuncture and even herbs with a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA), or have out-of-network benefits. Call your insurance provider for details!

What if my insurance does not cover acupuncture?

The listed services and fees includes an out-of-pocket discount to support reasonably priced treatment and optimal care. For updates on discounted Community Acupuncture sessions, please check our Events page or sign up for our newsletter.

Do you accept HSA or FSA cards?

Yes! We accept payments from Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flex Spending Account (FSA). We can provide superbills upon request. For billing and coverage details, please contact your employer or plan administrator.

Do you accept Medicare?

No. Currently, Medicare only covers acupuncture for low back pain. Due to current legal and procedural guidelines, acupuncturists cannot bill Medicare directly. While we can provide a superbill for you to submit to Medicare for potential reimbursement, we cannot guarantee payment. This process requires you to pay for your treatment upfront and submit the required paperwork yourself.

Do you accept Worker's Compensation?

No. We do not accept Worker's Compensation.

Acupuncture FAQ

What does acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is effective for a wide range of conditions. Even if you are in great health, acupuncture can improve your quality of life by enhancing your mood, boosting energy, and supporting your body's innate healing mechanisms.

How does acupuncture work?

The meridians are like rivers flowing through your body. If your river's blocked in one/ more places, then it blocks other areas/ systems downstream. Acupuncture opens up blockages to free the meridian-river's flow, recalibrating smoothly flowing whole-systems health. Acupuncture also releases endorphins, regulates hormones and brain chemicals, and optimizes balanced homeostasis.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture usually does not hurt. We insert filiform needles into specific locations. You might feel the initial light prick, but that sensation usually subsides quickly. Most people feel deeply relaxed and fall asleep during acupuncture. We balance your comfort with your health goals. Needle-free treatments are also available, such as cupping, herbs, or other modalities.

How often should I get acupuncture?

The frequency of acupuncture treatment depends on your body, how you respond to treatment, and your condition. An acute condition may require weekly acupuncture for four weeks, whereas a chronic condition may necessitate a monthly maintenance treatment. Commit to nourishing yourself with acupuncture, to create lasting change in your body!

Do you accept insurance?

Jiling is not an in-network provider for any insurance companies. However, the below applies:

  • For out-of-network coverage, we can write you a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for potential coverage.
  • You can use your Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

Please contact your insurance company directly for reimbursement information, and visit our Insurance page to learn more.

What training do acupuncturists go through?

Acupuncture regulations vary from state to state in the USA. Most states require graduation from a CCAOM- accredited university, then passing rigorous NCCAOM licensing examinations in both Western & Chinese anatomy, physiology, pathology, theory, and treatment. The California Acupuncture Board requires at least 2050 hours of didactic curriculum, with 950 hours of supervised clinical instruction. This takes 3 to 7 years of school, and a lifetime of continuing education. If you're thinking about Chinese medical school, read this blogpost. Chinese medicine is an art, science, and regulated licensed medical practice!

How does acupuncture treat pain?

Acupuncture deliberately and progressively desensitizes an over-stimulated nervous system to heal your perception of tissue damage, while provoking endogenous systemic control of pain and inflammation. Repeated therapeutic exposure helps transform maladaptive emotional reactions into meditative calm and self-control. Acupuncture helps you restore functional capacity and improve quality of life.

Why do you look at my tongue and take my pulse?

Chinese medicine diagnosis includes observation, inquiry, and palpation. Your tongue and pulse reflect your whole body's health, beyond what we can discern from questions alone. This helps us form a detailed, comprehensive, and accurate differential diagnosis and nuanced treatment plan.

Do you sell herbs?

We only recommend custom Chinese medicine formulas for current patients. Please visit our Herbs page to learn more! We do not sell or distribute herbal products to non-patients. Check out some of our favorite herbal vendors here.

Community Acupuncture FAQ

What is Community Acupuncture?

At community acupuncture, multiple people are treated simultaneously. Treatments take place either in a comfortable chair or on yoga mats or blankets. Patients do not disrobe but instead roll up pants or shirtsleeves to knees and elbows. Some community acupuncture sessions are individualized, whereas others may be themed around relaxation, stress reduction, or other community needs.

What's the difference between Community Acupuncture and Acupuncture?

Community Acupuncture is a group acupuncture experience. Treatments are conducted in a group environment, with other patients receiving acupuncture next to you. For individualized community acupuncture, Jiling conducts a focused assessment & treatment, moving efficiently from person to person. This affordable acupuncture opportunity builds community while effectively meeting your needs. Private acupuncture sessions are one hour treatments in a quiet room, with a complete health assessment, cupping, dietary/ lifestyle recommendations, and other modalities as needed.

How long does Community Acupuncture take?

The entire Community Acupuncture event may last from 1 - 2 hours. Your individual treatment should only take about 30 minutes. Stay for as long as your wish; you can leave whenever your treatment is complete.
